Students in Mrs. McCrady’s advanced eighth-grade language arts class were given the opportunity to enter the Letters About Literature Writing Contest for Young Readers sponsored by the Center for the Book in the Library of Congress.  Ohio came in fourth in national submissions with 2,428 entrants, who spanned the entire length and breadth of the Buckeye state. In Level II (Grades 7 & 8), there were 877 participants; 10 letters were written by Berne Union students.

Forty-seven out of the 974 Level I letters were advanced by the staff of the Center for the Book at the Library of Congress to state judging; 51 out of the 877 Level II letters and 59 out of the 576 Level III students were also advanced. In all, 147 letters were delivered to the staff of the Ohio Center for the Book at Cleveland Public Library for evaluation. After a preliminary round of judging, a total of 21 letters (7 from each level) were selected and given to a specially constituted panel of four judges. These four judges, who, professionally, reflected the disciplines of journalism and library and information science, utilized a grading rubric to determine each level’s First, Second, Third Place winners and four Honorable finalists.

Berne Union was well represented.  Letters written by Jayden Tharp, Allyson Bevins, and Paige Laughlin all made it to the final round of judging. In the end, Berne Union took 2 of the top 7 spots in Level II.

This year, Level I’s Winners and Honorable finalists came from school districts in Bay Village, Cleveland, Columbus, Dublin, Toledo, and Westlake. Winners and Honorable Students in Level II attended districts in Hamilton, Middleton, Olmsted Township, Sugar Grove, and Upper Arlington. Districts in Boardman, Brunswick, Bryan, Cincinnati, Liberty Center, Madison, and Westerville were represented in Level III.

We are excited to announce that Paige Laughlin’s letter to Ava Dellaira concerning her book Love Letters to the Dead was selected as the First Place Winner in Level II for the state of Ohio.

Allyson Bevins’ letter to Eric Wilson concerning the book October Baby was recognized as an Honorable Finalist.

Paige and Allyson along with their parents and Mrs. McCrady attended the awards ceremony on Saturday, May 6, 2016, at the Cleveland Public Library.  Each winner was recognized and letters for the top 3 in each level were read. Paige received the winner’s check for $100, and both girls were awarded a book bag containing 2 books. Following the ceremony, a luncheon was served.

Congratulations to Paige and Allyson for success.  Berne Union is very proud.
