Elementary/High School Collaboration

Jessica Wright and Lori McCrady recently found themselves in an unplanned collaboration. When Wright’s students’ I AM poems were featured in the entry hallway last month, they caught McCrady’s eye. The poems about different types of whales, featuring content-rich vocabulary learned by Wright’s 3rd and 4th grade students, became a sentence variety lesson for McCrady’s 8th graders.

McCrady’s students transformed the original poems into informational prose by varying the sentence beginnings with the use of introductory phrases and clauses. The two groups then met to share their work. During the meeting, the 8th graders taught a mini-lesson on sentence variety to the elementary students passing on their newfound skill. This is just one of the many benefits of attending a K-12 school district. Continue Reading Elementary/High School Collaboration
