Honor Society at Old Man’s Cave

Honor Society at Old Man's Cave

Berne Union Honor Society went to Old Man’s Cave on Friday for their annual picnic.  Students and parents hiked the trails, had a cook-out and spent the afternoon playing games.  It was a much needed and well earned stress-free day before heading into final exams.

The pictures below are from Mrs. Chapman’s and Mrs. Gerardi’s classes as they worked through one of the new common core standards for electricity.  The two classes studied electrical currents, cells, and closed circuits.  Knowing that the material was new to both classrooms, the teachers decided to merge the classes to share a peer mentoring task of building a closed circuit using batteries, light bulbs, wires, and various conductors.  Mrs. Reed (Middle School Science Teacher) helped supply the classes with the materials required to complete the task.  Mrs. Gerardi’s students had created these circuits in a past lesson, while Mrs. Chapman’s class had seen a demonstration of the circuit and studied the concepts in their science textbooks.  This is another example of students receiving a hands-on opportunity, working with real world items, which will stay with them throughout life!

Long Division

Technology has become an integral part of the modern classroom. By utilizing it effectively and blending strategies to reach different learning styles, it becomes easier to engage more students and create a fun and memorable learning environment. It the video below, you will see Mrs. Harris’ class using a combination of online videos and singing to learn long division. By using the tune of a popular song (“Ho Hey”) by the Lumineers and changing the words, students take a difficult subject and are able to learn concrete principals that can be applied to long division in a fun way. This is just one strategy used to take a hard subject and make it enjoyable for the students. Enjoy!

2015 Graduation Information / Senior Events

Dear Senior Parent:

As you are well aware, graduation is rapidly approaching. Graduation will be on Sunday, May 24, at 2:00 p.m. Tickets are not required and the ceremony will be in the gymnasium.

There will be a graduation rehearsal at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, May 22. Attendance at this rehearsal is mandatory if a graduate is to participate in the ceremony. A luncheon will be served for our graduates in the community room following rehearsal.

No student will participate in the ceremony unless they have met all graduation requirements by the State of Ohio and the Berne Union Board of Education.  Also, there will be a dress code for the ceremony which will be strictly enforced. Boys must wear dress pants (no jeans), a shirt with a tie plus a non-athletic shoe with dark socks (no work boots). Girls must wear a dress or skirt of appropriate length, and blouse with non-athletic shoes or sandals (no boots); dress pants may be worn with a non-athletic shoe.

No decorations on the graduation caps and no other hats.

All fines and obligations must be paid to receive your diploma.

Diplomas will be given after the graduation ceremony in the Media Center.

We will make it, with your help, a first class ceremony as we give The Class of 2015 a fitting send off.

The purpose of the graduation is to honor the class and I would ask that guests please refrain from shouting or calling out names of members of the class.  If you have any questions about graduation, please call me at the school at (740) 746-9956.

I look forward to seeing you on May 24, at what will be a special and exciting time for all of us.
